I will be comparing the two hurtwoodhouse media opening
title sequences, “Betty” and “Claudia. In one of the opening sequences called Claudia,
it indicates towards some kind of action genre. This is done through the use of
the camera techniques that were used at the start of the film. There were
multiple shots which created a montage sequence of a fight scene occurring. The
non diegetic music in the background after the fight scene is over has a very
creepy tone to it. This creates an atmosphere of some kind of thriller movie. The
movie Betty sets up its genre to be a comedy type thriller during this
sequence. This is done using techniques to show the contrast between the fist half
of the sequence and the second of half of the sequence. In the first half of
the sequence there is very peaceful non diegetic music playing in the background
which makes the audience seem that this movie is happy. In the second half of
the sequence the camera is used by all of the actor’s personality during the sequence.
It reveals that the main character is torturing these two people. She seems
quite sinister in the second half of the sequence, as she smiles while shooting
someone that she has tied up. These two films both seem to be a thriller type
of movie. However, one of them seems to be a dark comedy type, while the other
seems to have more action in it. These two sequences help communicate their
genre through the use of their techniques. Such as the actor’s personality in
Betty and in Claudia, the actioned packed sequence at the very start with the
use of camera and editing techniques. They both use music in order to show that
they are dark to some extent. In Claudia, after the fight scene there is creepy
music playing In the background which helps communicate the tone of the scene.
In the sequence, Betty, the second half of the sequence has a creepy sound
playing in the background as she prepares to shoot the man. This also helps create
a creepy atmosphere to the film. In the beginning of Claudia, during the fight
scene there is sounds of intense music playing in order to show action. In
Betty at the start there is peaceful music to trick the audience into believing
that it was a happy film. These two sequences both communicate their narrative.
In Claudia it shows that the main character in the opening is Claudia and she
is has some kind of important role in the film. It shows that she is some sort
of agent. In the film betty it shows that the main character is an evil
character who kills people. In Claudia, the camera is focused on the woman most
of the time which shows her importance. In Betty the main characters facial
expression indicates that she is some sort of evil character. Overall these two
sequences use techniques in order to show their genre and to show their
narrative.
I will be analysing the opening sequence to the movie Delicatessen.
The exposition to this sequence is used to set the time and place of this film.
In the sequence, non – diegetic sounds of Accordion music is played in the background.
This is used to set the location. It shows that this movie is set in France. This
movie also sets the time of film. There is an establishing shot of thick yellow
fog and there are broken buildings. This helps create the setting of this film.
It shows that war has occurred. The camera slowly zooms into a door. There are
diegetic, pleonastic sounds of a knife being sharpened. The camera zooms into
this knife and the chief sharpening it. This shows that this chief is an
important character in the film at the beginning there is barely any music in
the background. This creates a dark tone to this sequence. The camera moves to
someone that is disguising himself to hide in a bin. There is a close up on his
face which shows that he is nervous. His facial expression is an exaggerated
nervous face. When he hides in the bin and he gets found, the chief that finds
him, laughs and then slices down his knife. His laugh indicates that this film
is a comedy. The characters in this sequence are very exaggerated which shows
that this film is a comedy. This shows that this movie is a dark comedy. The chief
slicing the man who is hiding helps create the narrative to this film. It seems
to be about a chief that is a murderer.
After this moment, non-diegetic sounds of an accordion are
playing. This is used in order to create stereotypical French music which sets
the location of this film in France. The music is very playful which shows that
the genre of this film is a comedy. During the opening credits, the camera pans
to the right showing different items in the credits. This sets the location of
the scene. It zooms into a book. There is a hand which shows the dark humour of
the film. The editing with the transition with the knife into the title gives
off a comedic effect.
This sequence sets the time and place of this film. It shows
that is set in France. It shows that this France has been through war as it
shows the yellow fog and the broken buildings It also sets up the genre of the
film. It starts off very dark and builds up tension and suspense to the when
the character gets sliced by the chief. It sets up the story line of this movie.
It shows that this movie is about some chief that is a killer. It also sets up the genre as a dark comedy.
This is done using the acting of the characters. The acting is very exaggerated
which creates a comedic effect. At the end of the sequence, there is French accordion
music playing in the background. The music is very playful which shows the dark
comedy of the film
This movie is Captain America the winter soldier. This was released in 2014. It is a superhero film. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. Staring Chris Evans alongside with Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo, Hayley Atwell, Robert Redford, Emily VanCamp and Samuel L. Jackson. Created by Marvel Studios and Distributed by Walt Disney Studios.
As an action movie I will be looking at the opening sequence to captain America the winter soldier. The narrative that is given to us is that captain America is infiltrating a base. It shows him fighting some soldiers. This shows that he is the focus of the movie because of his significant role in the opening sequence. From this sequence, it is made clear that the rest of the film is going to be more action packed with a lot more fighting.
The target audience of this film is aimed at young teen males to old teen males due to the appearance of a comic superhero which is a big interest among that age range. This is also shown because of the massive amount of combat in this scene which that age range is interested in. The target audience are also comic book fans. It is for people who enjoy reading the superhero comic and then seeing that character be brought to life in a movie. A child would also come and watch this movie with their family. That is the overall target audience of this movie and that it what it’s trying to appeal to.
The scene starts off with a jet looking over the area while introducing the main character of this movie. It then shows the heavy combat. This communicates the genre of action because there is combat right from the start of the movie. There are also slight hints of comedy at the beginning. In the ship captain America is talking to a girl, they were on a ship speaking in a comedic manner. This portrays the genre of comedy to the viewers. This movie shows that it is mostly an action movie with some light comedy involved in the movie.
There are multiple characters in this opening sequence. The main two characters are captain the America, who is the main protagonist of the film and the woman black widow. We know their type of relationship. Mise en scene is used with the two characters behavior. The moment on the ship at the beginning they both seemed to have a friendly relationship with each other. We also know that they are both experienced in this type of situation due to them acting normally. We know that the characters are experienced in combat as the camera work shows that bye showing moments of both outclassing their opponents.
The camera is used to show the location of the sequence and to tell the narrative. The scene starts off with an establishing shot of an airship flying past with text below stating that it is in the Indian ocean. This sets the location of the scene, so the viewers know where they are. A brief introduction to the location. It then cuts inside the ship when they are talking about the mission to retrieve the ship. It starts off with a mid-shot of them talking about the situation. After they talk about the situation and the plan it cuts to captain America having a quick conversation. There is a use of over shoulder shots with captain America and black widow in order to show that they are having a conversation and shows their importance in the scene. When captain America jumps out of the plane, there is a bird’s eye shot on the ship. This is used to show the importance of this ship as captain America is about to go onto it. There is a tracking shot of captain America as he dives into the water which further shows his significance. There is another tracking shot of captain America as he is running on the ship to fight. There are multiple shots in from different angles. This happens frequently during combat. The next scene starts with an establishing shot of the location of the hostages. The camera then pans to focus on the hostages. This is done to help tell the narrative of pirates stealing a ship from agents. It then switches to two men who are the pirates. The camera zooms in on one of them showing that he is the most important one and is most likely the leader. There is then a far shot of black widow coming in fighting. The sequence then ends and shows a short trailer.
The scene starts off with diegetic sound of a jet flying past. It then cuts inside where some quiet non diegetic music is being played in a background. The music is quite intense. This music shows indicates that something is going to happen as this scene continues but it is also quiet so you can hear the team that is talking and it is done in order to understand what is happening in the scene. When captain America jumps out of the jet, the music gets more intense and it increases in volume. This continues onto the ship. This sound is parallel to what he is doing. It is used while he is on the ship fighting, in order to show the mood of the scene. It shows that it is very intense. When he is fighting there are diegetic sounds of metal clanking and contrapuntal sounds of punches and kicks. It is done in order to show the damage he is dealing and how strong he is. Shows he is experienced. When he starts walking across the music gets quieter as he is talking to black widow again. The next moment is when the pirate is talking, it is very quiet. It then cuts to black widow fighting and the intense non diegetic music starts again and gets louder as she is fighting.
The first use of editing is at the beginning when the characters are inside the Jet. When captain america talks to Black widow, An eyeline match in order to show that they are having a conversation. This also helps communicate the comedic manor of the conversation that they are having. Their is also a lot of shot reverse shot during the moment to show they are having a conversation. Elliptical editing is used as he gets onto the ship. It completely skips the moment when he starts climbing from the water onto the ship, and then skips to when he has got into the ship. This is done in order to skip the boring part of him climbing and cut to the important part to where he is actually on the ship and starting to clear it out. While he is on the ship, Short shot duration is used. It shows multiple quick shots of when he is fighting, this is done in order to increase the intensity of the scene and communicate the narrative. When it cuts inside the ship to the hostages there is a soundbridge of a loud sound effect. When it cuts back to captain america. It shows him climbing up higher on the ship. Elliptical editing is used in order to skip this journey of him climbing the ladder and get to the important part. The Final part is when Black Widow starts fighting pirates. There are more quick cuts during this moment in order to increase the intensity of the scene.
Overall, this opening sequence is successful. It clearly portrays the genre of action to the viewers through the use of the extreme amount of combat displayed throughout the sequence. It is also able to clearly able to establish the location of the sequence. It is able to tell the story through the use of the dialogue at the very start. This is done to make it clear about what is happening in the sequence. It is effectively able to show how intense the moment is through the use of the sounds that are played during the sequence. This is also helped through the use of camera techniques. The camera techniques are also used in order to show the importance of characters and used in order to show the relationship of these characters. So in conclusion, this sequence was successful.
The horror movie sequence I will be talking about is It. During the sequence, there is a boy that is running in the rain to go and retrieve his paper boat. When it lands in the sewer, there is a clown there that is creepy. The clown is smiling and by the end of the sequence, the clown kills the boy. This sequence shows that the clown is a main focus of this movie. Since there is only two characters in this opening sequence and one of them dies, then clown is an important character. It shows that the rest of the movie will be focused on him the clown trying to kill people.
The target audience for this film are people from 16 - 24. This age range of people are interested in the horror genre and are targeted to watch this film. This movie is a remastered version of two it movies that were released in the 90's. Those old it movies were adapted from a novel of the same name by steven king. The people that read the book when it was released would be interested in watching the movie. The people that watched the original adaptations are also targeted to watch this film. So, a large range of demographics are the target audience for this type of movie. This is shown by the overall creepy tones of this sequence. The suspense that builds up from the boy getting his boat to him being killed would interest the 16 - 24 age range because it would be scary for them to watch.
Only two characters are introduced in the film the clown named pennywise and the boy named Georgie. The boy is deceived by pennywise in the introduction and killed. He seemed to learn to trust pennywise during their encounter before pennywise kills him. The techniques are used with the lighting on pennywise. Only his mouth is lighted up which shows that he is a mysterious character. mise en scene is also used with the characters behavior and personality, acting lighthearted but with quite a creepy tone to his voice. This immediately tells the audience that something is not right with this character and something bad is about to happen to Georgie. Mise end scene with penny wises appearance. The character has makeup like a clown. The viewers can vaguely see his clown outfit. This makes him seem even more creepy as you don’t see a clown creeping out of a sewer which creates suspense in the scene.
The moment is when Georgie starts to go to play with his boat. There scene starts off with an establishing shot of a house and the rainy weather. A bird’s eye view shot used to get a good shot of the location. This is done in order to portray where sequence is taking place. There is a tracking shot of the boy as he is running to go get his boat. There is then a point of view shot with what seems to be his brother that is inside the house. There is then another tracking shot as it follows the character playing with his boat. There is another bird’s eye shot that tracks his movement. The camera then continues to follow him and then he hits his head. It then cuts to a mid-shot that is focused on the paper boat. This shows that something is about to happen with this boat. There is then a point of view shot of Georgie when he sees the clown. There is a close up shot on pennywise. This is done in order to show penny wises importance in the sequence. It also shows his creepy facial expression which shows that something scary is about to happen. There are plenty over shoulder shots to show the conversation that they are having. This also shows that they are presumably having fun. When pennywise tells Georgie to take the boat, the camera starts to zoom into pennywise as the scene progresses indicating that something is about to happen. It also zooms in on Georgie’s face showing that he looks very vulnerable to his clown. Makes the viewers scared for him. Then he gets killed.
There is sound used in the sequence. In the beginning, there are diegetic sounds of rain playing in the backroad. This communicates the weather and helps to establish the location of the scene. There are pleonastic sounds of his footsteps when he starts walking down the stairs. This shows what is happening. When the boy starts running, non-diegetic sounds in the form of quite happy music is playing in the background. This music starts, immediately when the boy starts to play with his paper boat. It shows that he is having a lot of fun during this moment. There are diegetic sounds of water splashing. These sounds are frequent which shows that he is running. These sounds continue until he bumps his head and there is a loud thud sound. When this happens the background music stops playing. This is done to show that this was not good for Georgie as he hurt himself. This also shows the switch of tone during the sequence. At first it is very happy and then the mood changes into something more creepy during this sequence. Non diegetic music starts again but this time it has switched tone. It has now switched to a feeling of urgency as the boy struggles to catch up to his boat. When the boat falls down the music completely stops. He then starts talking to the clown. There is then quiet, mysterious non diegetic music playing in the background as they start talking. This music gradually gets more intense as the moment progresses. It then eventually ends up with Georgie being prompted to reach for his boat. As he reaches for his boat the music starts to get louder and louder. This helps build suspense and tension and then suddenly his arm gets bitten off. While he is screaming out, the music gets louder which shows how terrible his situation is. The music then stops as he is pulled in by the clown.
Editing is used when the boy starts following the paper boat. There is a short shot duration as he is running This is done in order to show it from different angles, this helps to show the location of the scene and what the boy is doing. There is elliptical editing used. This is done to skip all of the journey of his running and skip to the important parts such as when he crashed into the sign. When he starts running again, elliptical editing is used as he is running and skips to the important part to when the boat eventually falls down. When the boy starts his conversation with pennywise, there are multiple cuts. These are very fast in order to show their conversation. It eventually ends up with Georgie being killed.
Overall I believe that this scene was very successful in communicating meaning to the audience. This is clearly able to portray its genre of horror by the use of its very creepy music. They did not show us very much about this clown character this was effective in making him seem more mysterious and therefore making him seem very scary.
I will be analysing the War movie called Dunkirk. It was directed by Christpher Nolan. It was produced by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas. It stars Fionn Whiteheard, Tom Glynn - Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Banard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy. It was released in 2017. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The narrative of the sequence of the war movie Dunkirk. During the opening sequence, the narrative that is given off during the opening scene, is that the characters are in some type of war. The uniform that they are wearing shows that the date is quite old. It is most likely World War I or II. The opening sequence introduces the narrative with text on the screen immediately when the movie starts. It says "THE ENEMY HAVE DRIVEN THE BRITISH AND FRENCH ARMIES TO THE SEA. TRAPPED AT DUNKIRK THEY AWAIT THEIR FATE". This clearly shows what this story is going to be about. Soldiers are stuck in an island due to being driven off by Germans during world war I. Based on what the director has shown us, it is implied that the movie will be about these soldiers struggles while on this island, and how they will get out of this situation. It shows soldiers being shot down at the beginning, showing that they are not in a great situation.
The target audience for this movie are probably male teenagers. This is due to the mass amount of violence that is shown off at the beginning of the film. It is something that age demographic is interested in.
The genre of the film has been set up at the beginning as a war movie due to some dialogue, the setting of the scene and how the characters are. The characters are all dressed up in a soldier uniform which shows that they are in a warzone. There are guns being fired constantly which shows that there is a battle going on during this sequence which indicates towards a war therefore portraying the war genre to the viewers. The dialogue is used to show that it is during World War I. This is shown when the character that is running away at the beginning goes up to some soldiers and says the phrase "I am English" in order to get soldiers to stop shooting. This is done as it helps show that this is set during World War I.
There are multiple people in this scene however there is only one character that is properly introduced. That is the boy that is running away at the very start of the film. We know that he is a young character due to his appearance and his voice. This also shows that he is quite inexperienced due to his age. This is shown as he struggles to get his gun to work. It shows that he is quite scared during the sequence. This suggests the type of character he is.
At the start of the movie, an establishing shot is used which clearly shows the characters in this scene and shows the location. All the characters are dressed up like they are in the army in World War I. This shot is effective in clearly showing the time period of this scene. It also shows the situation of the scene. The next moment that is shown, is one of the soldiers looking at a piece of paper. During this moment, a close up is used on the paper. This shows that these people are Soldiers that have been closed in on this island. This helps portray the narrative. It shows what type of situation these soldiers are in. The next moment is when they are searching for supplies, but they are then attacked by enemies. While they are running away from these Germans, A tracking shot is used on them, this is done to show their importance in this sequence and the overall movie. Although most of them get shot while running away, it clearly shows that this movie is focusing on the British and French side of this War rather than the opposing side. The next moment is when the last soldier standing is running away. When he climbs over the fence and starts to load up his gun, a close up is used on his face, this is done in order to show his facial expression. It shows that he is not in a good position. He runs away from the bullets there is a tracking shot of him running away, shows that he is important, it shows that this character is most likely the main character of this War Film. He then runs back to the rest of his allies
Overall This opening sequence was successful in showing what the narrative of this sequence was about. It was successful in showing the situation of these soldiers throughout the sequence by showing them getting shot. It was able to communicate the genre by the mass amount of shooting which showed that the genre was war. It was also successful in introducing the main character of this movie. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
I will be analyzing the filmed that is ready player one. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg. The was based on a novel that was released in 2011 written by Ernest Cline. It stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, Mark Rylance. It was released in 2018.
The narrative that is set up at the beginning of the film ready player one is that there is some sort of virtual reality game that has been made. It also suggests that this game has become extremely successful and popular among a wide variety of people. There is narration during the sequence that helps explain what it is. Due to the heavy focus on the "oasis" it gives off the impression that this is what the movie is about and will be the main focus throughout the movie.
The target audience is most likely teenage boys. This opening title sequence is able to easily identify the target audience during the very first moment. At the beginning there are people on some planet called plant doom. It shows people shooting each other with guns and there are multiple robots and lasers. These types of aspects would definitely appeal to that specific age range. Throughout the first half of this opening sequence, this is was the on the screen most of the time. The rest of the sequence focuses on the impact that this thing has had on the world.
This movie establishes its genre at the very beginning. It shows that this genre is a science fiction during the opening title sequence due to what is shown on the screen and due to the narration. It shows the display the capabilities of this machine due to the first moment of this sequence. The narration throughout the sequence also helps communicate the genre of sci fi. The presumably main character of this sequence explains what is happening during the first scene. He also explains what this machine is and what it does and how it has affected the world. This is science fiction as in real life we have not reached a point in technology where we can do that. It displays this straight away at the beginning of this film.
There are not many characters introduced in this opening title sequence. The main characters best friend is introduced. The main character is the narrator at the beginning of this sequence. Not much is known about this character. No techniques are used by him in order to show what type of character he is. His best friend in this world is introduced. Mise en scene is used with the way he speaks, it shows that he is quite an energetic character. That is the only character introduced.
The very first moment of interest starts off with a far establishing shot of this planet. It then zooms into the planet in order to reveal much more. It shows that there is some kind of battle happening. This establishes the location of this moment. This shot also introduces the mass amount of tech in this sequence. Then a tracking shot is used on the best friend named H. This is done in order to show that he is an important character in this sequence and that he will probably be an important character throughout as this movie progresses. The next moment is when it starts showing people in real life. Multiple shots of different varieties of people in completely different locations. This is done in order to show the effect that this game has had on people’s lives. The next key moment is when he starts talking about the creator of this device and game. An establishing shot is used while he is doing a presentation about this game. This expresses his significance during this scene and throughout the movie. There is then a close up on his face as it shows his dead body. This is done in order to show that this creator is now dead and has had a significant impact on the world. It then cuts to a scene with what seems to be a classroom. The camera starts off at the right and pans to the left which shows all of these children in class watching the message that the creator has given them. This is done in order to show that this man James Halliday has impacted the lives of children a lot as they are all watching this message in class. There are close ups on their face which show their distraught facial expression. In the final moment there is a shot on Halliday that zooms in which zooms in on him slowly. He starts giving information about Easter eggs in this game. This shot shows that the information is important and will be a focus for the duration of the film.
In the first moment in this sequence during the battle at the beginning on this game, diegetic sound of guns and bombs are used in order to establish the location of this moment. This continues throughout this moment until the sequence switches focus. There are parallel sounds of laser guns shooting, this helps communicate the genre of science fiction to the viewers. in the next moment of the scene. While the main character starts narrating about the oasis and the creator James Halliday, there is some upbeat non diegetic music that is playing in the background. This is done in order to communicate the mood of this sequence and the genre of the film. It also helps give off the impression that this device was a great creation and the creator was a great man. During the moment where it shows his dead body, Dracula music starts playing, this gives off an exaggerated theme of death. This is done in order to show the situation of the moment as it shows that James Halliday is dead, and it also helps communicate comedy. When he starts explaining the keys, pleonastic sound starts to play of keys, this is done in order to show that these keys are important in this movie. His speech also has an echo to it, which makes it more significant.
Editing is used at the beginning of the scene while people are shooting each other. Editing is used by using slow motion, the director has done this in order to make this scene cooler and it would help interest younger audiences. Editing is also used with a montage sequence used as it quickly cuts between different varieties of people using this machine. This is done in order to quickly show off that this machine has affected the lives of a large variety of different people. While the best friend is running at the beginning of this sequence, a long shot duration is use on him. This is done in order to communicate the significance of the character. When he starts talking about the creator James Halliday, there is a long shot duration of him and his friend as they are doing their presentation of the oasis. This is done as it matches up with the narration of the scene. So, it helps tell the story and how important James Halliday was in the creation of this device. When it shows his death and him in his coffin, montage sequence of different age groups of students to show the wide range of ages this oasis has reached.
Overall, I think this scene is successful in introducing the narrative of this story and what it will be about during the rest of the film. I also think it was successful in portraying the genre of science fiction due to the extensive use of shots of what the system can do. However, it did not show much about the narrator of this sequence, who is the main character of the movie. It did not introduce him very well. It did not really show much about his best friend he was talking about as well. This helped me focus more on the narrative, but It would have been more effective if they had briefly introduced this character and shown what type of person he is. Overall, I enjoyed the showcase of narrative and genre but not characters.
The Thriller Movie I will be analyzing, is the movie called Don’t Breathe. It
was directed by Fede Alvarez. It was released in 2016. It stars Jane Levy,
Dylan Minnette, Daniel Zovatto and Stephen Lang.
The narrative that is given in this opening scene is that there are people
in a robbery. There is someone that has broken into a house and threatened
someone. The old man that has been threatened has managed to take the gun away
from the robber and get him in a strangle position. He then kills the robber. There
are three robbers that are there, after one of them gets killed, the rest of them
get worried and scared This suggests that the narrative will be about this old
man throughout the rest of the movie. It suggests that It will be about these
robbers maybe trying to escape from this old man who they have chosen to mess
with.
The genre is a thriller. This is due the suspense that is bult up at the beginning
of the sequence and then ends up with a death by the end of the sequence. It can
effectively portray the genre by using techniques to build suspense and then finishing
it off with something unexpected. A scare. They make the viewers concerned about
these robbers now that one of them has just been overpowered and killed. Not
much is known about this old man that has just killed someone, but what has
been shown, suggests that he is a scary individual and the techniques used in
this scene help that.
The target audience are definitely old teens to adults. These are the type
of movies they are interested in. They are interested in being scared by movies.
This movie created suspense for the viewers and then ended it off with them
scaring the audience.
The characters that are introduced in the beginning are the three robbers
that come into the house and try to rob it. This is shown through the use of
mise en scene with the characters clothing. The characters clothing is quite dark
in colors. This is done in order to show that these people are robbers and are
trying to steal something from this house. One of the robbers that is
introduced seems to be portrayed as quite confident at the beginning of the scene.
Mise en scene is used with his personality which is quite intimidating at the beginning.
It then leads onto fear by the end of the sequence, this is done in order to
show that he is used to robbing these places as he seems quite confident at the
starts. However, it shows that he is not used to people resisting his robbery.
The other characters that are introduced in this scene were not really touched
on at the beginning. The other character that was introduced in the scene was
the old man. Mise en scene is used with his personality, he does not say
anything and does not really react to the robber much. This shows that there is
something strange about this character. This helps scare the audience.
The camera is used in the beginning of the scene with an establishing shot
of the house with the robbers in it. This sets up the location of the scene. It
also helps tell the narrative of people robbing a house. The Camera then pans
from the left to the right which reveals an old man asking who is there. The
next moment is when the robber starts to talk to the old man and tries to lie.
There is a mid-shot of the robber as he tries to make up a lie. There is then a
close up on his face when he aims then gun, this shows that he is serious and
also increases the intensity of this scene. The next moment is when the old
blind man slowly walks closer to the robber. During this moment a worm’s eye
view shot is used as he approaches him. This is done in order to imply that this
man is quite powerful which indicates that the robber is going to have a bad
time. There is another close up on the robber as he shoots. During the close up
his facial expression has changed to a more nervous one. There is then a shot
of the third robber. The next moment is when he strangles the robber. There is
a close up on his face which shows his fear. There is also a close up on the woman
robber in the scene which shows her fear of this blind man that has just managed
to get close and strangle the robber. The scene ends when the Old man kills the
robber.
Sound is used in the beginning of the sequence when a quiet, creepy non diegetic
sounds is played in the background. This sound is played when they notice that
the old man can see them. Then suddenly there is no sound. As the scene
progresses, there is no sound. The next moment is when the robber makes a gunshot
in order to scare the old man. There is a parallel, diegetic sound of a gunshot
that is played in the background. This played in order to shock the audience.
There is no sound leading up to this point and then suddenly there is a loud
gunshot. The next moment is when the old man grabs the robber. When this is
done, non-diegetic music is played in the background. This music is very
intense and matches with the mood of the scene. This scene has just increased
in intensity and when the gun is grabbed by the old man. While he starts to
eventually strangle the robber, the music gets louder and more intense. The
scene then begins to quiet down. When the robber starts to talk and say that it
he is the only one in the house, the sound stops because the it thought that he
is safe. Then suddenly a loud diegetic sound is played as the robber gets
killed. The music that is played throughout the scene reflects the hostility of
this old blind man. This loud explosion sound that is played, has been
exaggerated in order to match the intensity of this scene and the urgency of
this moment for the robbers.
Editing is used at the beginning of the scene when the robber starts
talking to the old man. There is a shot reverse shot between the old man and
the Robber. This is done in order to show their exchange in dialogue, even if
it is a only a little. When the Robber aims his gun at the Old man, There is a
long shot duration as he is talking and aiming, This shows the intensity of this
moment. When the trigger is fired there is a sound bridge into the third robber.
This is done in order to show that he has also heard this shot. As the old man
approaches him and grabs him, there are multiple cuts in order to show that he
is being damaged a lot. From different angles. There is then an eyeline match
as they talk while the robber is being strangled. This is done to show their
conversation. A shot reverse shot is also used here to show their scary talk.
When the robber is killed there is a moment of slow motion, this is done in
order to focus on the mans face as he is killed.
Overall, this sequence was quite effective in introducing the characters in
the scene. The main character focus was definitely the old man in this sequence
in order to show how dangerous he was and to make the audience feel scared for
these robbers who are not about to have the greatest experience. It set up the
narrative by showing the robbers attempting to rob this house. However, there
is not much context about this whole robbery it just jumps straight into the
house with the robbery.
What all of these opening scenes have in common, is that they were all able
to effectively portray their genre. They were all able show that their genre was
in the beginning. For example captain america the winter soldier did these by
showing a lot of combat in the beginning which helped show it was an action movie.
Ready Player One also did this by introducing the oasis to the audience which
showed off its science fiction genre.
There were scenes that were different from others. The one sequence that
stood out was the thriller move, don’t breathe. There was a lack of sound In
that sequence. The lack of sound in that sequence made it more scary compared
to the other scenes that were looked at that used a lot of sound to show its
narrative to the audience. It also did not explain much narrative in don’t
breathe, this was done in order to make things more mysterious to the audience.
All the audience know, is that there is a house robbery. They don’t know when
or why this is happening right now. Compared to the other sequence which focus
on their narrative a lot.
In my opinion the most successful opening sequence was Captain America the
winter soldier. It was effectively able to introduce the two main characters of
this movie. It showed a lot of their personality during the sequence. It also
is effectively able to show the narrative in the beginning by using the
dialogue on the jet by talking about the situation. The genre was effectively
portrayed with the mass amount of combat that is shown 1 minute into the sequence.
The least successful in my opinion was the movie, Dunkirk. This movie was effectively
able to communicate its narrative and genre through the use of various
techniques. However, it was severely lacking in introducing the characters. There
was barely anything said about the main character that was running away. He did
not show much personality during the sequence and I believe they should have
used the opportunity to introduce him as a character. In ready player one the
main character also is not introduced, however some other characters are. In Dunkirk
its lacking there.
Today we've looked at the opening title sequence to the movie, the shining. There is an establishing shot which shows the location of the scene. It then cuts to the car going on a jouney. There is a long shot duration during the scene. It does not skip any of the journey, it shows isolation. We dont ever see the characters in the car. There is creepy non diegetic sound, which shows that the movie is going to be scary. Juxtoposition is used with the music of the scene and the scenary. The scenary is beautiful whereas the music in the scene is vey creepy. The credits are large which and in a blue color which switches my attention to the credits. There is a birds eye shot on the car. The camera is handheld and not focussed.
There are sounds of people screeching or shouting, which adds to the effect of making the sequence seem creepy.
There are some other cars in the scene but they are going the opposite way which shows the isolation of the scene. The scene ends with car arriving at the destination, which is a hotel. Its looks wierd. Its brown. When the scene gets to the hotel another non diegetic scream sound is played, which indicates that there is something srange about the hotel.
In media, we practiced our camera techniques. We were given a storyboard scenario. In it, someone was being pressured by someone else to do something. We had to come up with an idea that would fit this. So we came up with the idea of someone stealing sweets and being pressured by someone else to do it. The whole process went kind of well. We were able to come up with the idea very quickly meaning that we had plenty of time to film the whole thing. We were able to decide what we were doing with the shots. When we got to do the shots, I used the phone camera while the two girls were the actors. One problem we encountered was the location of the shots. We filmed it in the main area near the reception where there were a lot of people. This meant that it was hard to take the shots because people would start walking down the hallway which meant that they would be getting in the way of the shots. This would cause us to start losing time as we had to wait for the place to be clear. In hindsight, we probably should have chosen a different area where it was empty so we could film it. It was a mistake by the group when choosing the area to film it. When the area was empty we had no problems filming the shots. I was able to record that shots fine. We were able to use these shots to effectively create meaning by showing that someone is being pressured by someone else into stealing some sweets. Another problem we encountered on the way was getting the video together. I was having trouble sending the clips so that they could be edited. This problem was due to my lack of knowledge of the phone which caused the group to take up time meaning that it would be hard to finish off the editing. Overall the process of doing this task was quite good however there could have been some improvements. We were able to get the idea quickly. We were able to decide our roles quickly. The problems we encountered were the location that we decided to shoot in and putting the whole thing together, and getting the whole video edited together. If we were to do the task again, then those two negative aspects would be what we would have to think about before starting which would allow for a more effective process.
