Delicatessen opening

I will be analysing the opening sequence to the movie Delicatessen. The exposition to this sequence is used to set the time and place of this film. In the sequence, non – diegetic sounds of Accordion music is played in the background. This is used to set the location. It shows that this movie is set in France. This movie also sets the time of film. There is an establishing shot of thick yellow fog and there are broken buildings. This helps create the setting of this film. It shows that war has occurred. The camera slowly zooms into a door. There are diegetic, pleonastic sounds of a knife being sharpened. The camera zooms into this knife and the chief sharpening it. This shows that this chief is an important character in the film at the beginning there is barely any music in the background. This creates a dark tone to this sequence. The camera moves to someone that is disguising himself to hide in a bin. There is a close up on his face which shows that he is nervous. His facial expression is an exaggerated nervous face. When he hides in the bin and he gets found, the chief that finds him, laughs and then slices down his knife. His laugh indicates that this film is a comedy. The characters in this sequence are very exaggerated which shows that this film is a comedy. This shows that this movie is a dark comedy. The chief slicing the man who is hiding helps create the narrative to this film. It seems to be about a chief that is a murderer.

After this moment, non-diegetic sounds of an accordion are playing. This is used in order to create stereotypical French music which sets the location of this film in France. The music is very playful which shows that the genre of this film is a comedy. During the opening credits, the camera pans to the right showing different items in the credits. This sets the location of the scene. It zooms into a book. There is a hand which shows the dark humour of the film. The editing with the transition with the knife into the title gives off a comedic effect.

This sequence sets the time and place of this film. It shows that is set in France. It shows that this France has been through war as it shows the yellow fog and the broken buildings It also sets up the genre of the film. It starts off very dark and builds up tension and suspense to the when the character gets sliced by the chief. It sets up the story line of this movie. It shows that this movie is about some chief that is a killer.  It also sets up the genre as a dark comedy. This is done using the acting of the characters. The acting is very exaggerated which creates a comedic effect. At the end of the sequence, there is French accordion music playing in the background. The music is very playful which shows the dark comedy of the film.

Filming with sound

In Media we filmed a short sequence of are own. In the sequence my group was with amy and jan and we filmed a sequence of them on the ofa and them talking. We were at the editing suite filming our sequence. We also learnt how to use the microphone and put it onto the camera. There is an zlr cable and then that is connected into the camera and connected into the microphone. Then there is a microphone holder that is used to hold the micrphone to use it. We had to shoot a wide shot, then two over the shoulder shots, then two close ups. The wide shot I shot was of both of them on the sofa talking first. I then did and over the shoulder shot on Jana talking to Amy. I then did an over the shoulder shot of Amy talking to Jana. After that I did a close up on each of their faces and then the sequence ends. I did have to retake some of the shots, such as the first over the shoulder shot, the wide shot and one of the close ups because I did not take them well the first time.

Editing

We learned how to edit our  videos. The shots that we took in the shot sequence we made were on the computers and we had to put them together. There are different aspects to adobe premier pro that we learned.  At the bottom left corner there is a project section with bins. a Bin is a folder in editing to store certain parts of footage in. There are two screens at the top, the one on the right shows the project and the edited version and the one on the left show the shots that were stored originally. There are rushes. There are buttons such as the play button, and a cursor that can be used to scroll through the sequence. We created a log-bin and started to edit the footage together. We created the log bin to store in all of the necessary shots in. The first shot was me walking up the stairs we used the feature that allowed you to get a certain section of the shot and put it into a new project. We got the first shot of the wide shot of me walking up the stairs and cut out the first part that just takes time for me to get to the stairs. So we ended up with it just starting with me about to walk up the stairs. When I put me hand on the railing me and carl got another shot of the close-up that we filmed of my hand and put that in. We put it together just before my hand landed on the railing so it looked a lot smoother. As my hand moved off of it and my leg moved up We got another section which was a close up of my feet and put that in as my feet went on the step and walked up. After the shot of my feet walking up the stairs, we then got the first wide shot again and put it at the end of my getting to the top of the stairs. and then the sequence ends. The second sequence we did not finish however we got some shots in there. We cut out the beginning of waiting for carl to move and cut to when carl walks to the case. When he gets to the case, we get the shot of the close-up of his hands taking the item out of the camera case and closing the camera case and about to lift it up, then it finished cause we ran out of time to get the final shot in. The final shot would have switched back to the shot of him carrying the case away.

Getting everything ready

Getting everything ready. In Media We sorted out everything to finish everything off by sending all of the remaining emails to get the cast and getting the remaining props for our opening title sequence. Jana managed to email The teacher in order to ask to use her kids on Monday the 3rd, the bank holiday. She also emailed the drama department in order to get access to the sheets. She is organizing the boxes for the sequence. Kai was going to email claire the epq teacher, however we ended up reaching to the conclusion
that a mum would not be necessary in an opening title sequence. I asked Adam  to borrow him to be the dad and asked for his daughter so that she could be the girl in the asylum. I also asked Adam about using his car to film some shots with in the sequence. Kai organised to get the drone so we could film the shot of the car driving up to peaslake.

Media practising shooting shots.

In Media we practiced shooting shots and alongside that we learned some phrases that people use on on a film set. Stand by means that everyone should get ready and the camera operator should get ready to shot. Then the cameraman says standing by to show that he is ready. The director would then so roll camera. This is when the Camera Man starts recording and after he does he will say "rolling". The Director would then say action and then the actors would start to do what they are suppost to do. The director says cut when he wants things to end. We had to take 3 shots in groups to show a simple task. We also went over the 180 degree rule again. It is when there is a line between two things that should not be crossed by the camera or it makes things look reversed. In the group I was in, we took 3 shots. One of the shots was a wide shot of me walking up the stairs. So we set up the camera and the tripod and filmed the shot. The second shot we took was a close up of my hand on the railing as I walked up the stairs. The last shot We took as a shot of my feet as I was walking up the stairs, these two shots were filmed together to show the simple task of me walking up the stairs. We took another few shots after. The shots were of carl getting the camera case putting something inside, then closing ait and carrying it away. We took two shots of that. One of the shots was a close up of his hands when putting the item in and closing the case. Another shot was a mid shot of him walking over to the case and putting the item in and carrying the case and walking away.

Learning how to use a camera

In Media we learnt how to set up a camera and use it. First we were told to take out the tripod from the bag. The three legs on the tripod have to be pulled out to stand. There are locks at the bottom of each leg. Loosening these locks allows that tripod to moved up. After the tripod is moved up the lock is to be tightened again so it can stay in place. On the Tripod there is a yellow circle, there is then a pan handle in the bag and we take out the pan handle to be put onto the right of the yellow circle that is facing us. There are pan and tilt locks of the camera. The pan lock is to be unlocked so it loosens so you can pan the tripod to the right or lef and when it is in position the pan lock can be tightened again so it stays in place. The tilt lock is a lock that when loosened allows the tripod to move up and down and when tightened it keeps it in place.  There is a bolt between the legs of the tripod that when loosened allows the top of the tripod to be moved around. There is an air bubble inside the yellow circle. We were told to loosen the bolt and get the air bubble in the middle of the circle and then tightne the bolt again.

We then got the camera out of the bag. We got the camera out of the bag and under the camera there is this tripod shoe that is to be placed on the tripod head.  There is a metal piece on the tripod that comes out but should be put back in in order for the camera to be put in properly. The camera can slide onto the tripod and then there is a lock to tighten. There is then a button on the tripod to release the camera so it can be taken off of the tripod. We then took out a battery. There is a v lock on the battery that is put onto the battery lock on the camra. On the camera lense, there is a lens cap that we take off. There is then piece which has a screen that is to be folded out. Inside that  part there is the power button. When the camera is on, We zoomed and focused. There is a part of the lense that we twisted so we could zoom, then behind it there was something that we twisted to focus, then after we focused it we zoomed out again slightly to get a good shot. There is an exposure which is a blue piece at the bottom of the light. We turned this exposure so that it made the outside more clear on the camera. There are interior lights and natural lights. The interior lights are orange and natural lights are blue. There is a white balance option of the screen of the camera to get the rid color when filming inside or outside. We then played around with these cameras for a bit more and then packed them away.

Meeting after Easter

We met up after the eater holiday. We took a look at the storybard of the opening sequence and went through whole the sequence went. We then discussed with someone who is a camera expert what we were doing exactly so we could be assisted with the sequence. We were told the day we were going to be shooting our sequence. While we went rhough out we discussed things like the props we needed like cardboard boxes for the house. We were going to need to get sheets for the house to put over the furniture so it looks old when we flashback to the past in the sequence. We discussed getting the drone available. The result was that is is able to be fine to be filmed and we have that sorted out now.
