Betty

 I will be analyzing the hurtwood house a1 opening title sequence called "Betty".

 The scene starts with toast coming out of the toaster.  The shot of the toaster is an establishing shot of the scene showing that the location of the sequence is a house. It then cuts to a girl spreading jam on the toast. The elliptical editing is used to skip the whole jam spreading process and cuts to her eating the toast. peaceful and quiet music is playing in the backround. Then cuts to a mid shot on the girls body. Mise en sine is used with the characters clothing. Its black, which indicates towards something sad and dark.  It then cuts to her going into her room. Mise en scene is used with natrual lighting coming  through the window. Showing the location of the scene and portraying a happy mood. It cuts through the different clothing she wants to wear. It then ends up with her deciding to wear a suit. The suit attire indicates that she is going to work. Elliptical editing is used again with the scene skipping the whole process of putting on the clothes and skips to the end of of her havin the clothing on. Mise en sine is used with her facial expression. Quite normal. Shows that she is living a normal peacful life. She puts on red lipstick. 

It then cuts to the opening title saying the word "Betty". It then cuts to her walking into a new room.  Mise en scene is used with her facial She has a sinister grin on her face in the first few seconds which shows that something is strange. Throughout the moment, non diegetic sound is playing in the form of creepy and scary music which shows that that the genre of this is horror. It then cuts to two people being tied up on the floor. The shot is an over shoulder shot showing the two people from the girls perspective. There is a close up on the man in order to show his struggle in the moment. Another over shoulder shot is used. The camera keeps on cutting between the girl and the people. When it cuts to the girl her smile is more evil. It then cuts to her mouth, which she says the words goodbye. There is a close up on the woman on the floor tied up showing her struggle as well. The scene blacks out  then there is a diegetic sound of a gunshot, clearly showing the the woman has shot this man in the head and killing him.  

The whole sequence seems normal and then it progresses, suprising the audience with a  a completely different tone. However there were moments which alluded towards the final moment in the form of mise en sine. The girls clothing was black which shows that something strange about the sequence, portraying  a dark tone. Her lipstick and the jam were both red. Blood is the colour of red which hints towards violence. So overall it was quite normal at the start but there were small hints that alluded to what the actual tone and atmosphere of the sequence and the genre of it.
